The WBS is the official year-long calendar of sanctioned events connecting to the official World Rankings. It is a joint venture between World Bowls and Tier 5 Ventures. The sanctioned events occur across the globe and include a mixture of current and new events.

WBS commenced in 2024 with twenty-nine (29) sanctioned events with each WBS event belonging to a different tier based on the size, location and stature it presents for the game of Bowls.

The purpose of WBS is to build the profile and brand of bowls, showcase the best players in the game, accelerate the legitimacy of the sport on the global stage and launch World Rankings that will create clarity, and interest in the sport of Bowls.

Later in 2024, WBS will be launching rankings for Para Bowlers where the participation and profile is increasing across the World.

How are the rankings calculated?
Ranking points are earned by players based on their finishing position at the 26 sanctioned events.

The total number of points available at each event is determined by the following factors:

  • Event classification (Platinum, Gold or Silver), as per the events’ sanctioning agreement with WBS.
  • Specific disciplines which are available for athletes to compete in for ranking points.
  • The number of finishing positions which earn ranking points within each discipline.
  • How long ago the event was held.
  • The total number of unique results which can contribute to an athlete’s ranking.
  • The overall time-period where rankings points can contribute to an athlete’s rankings total.

How have the inaugural rankings been developed?
Prior to launching, an extensive process of development, analysis and testing was conducted over a 18-month period. Throughout this process, detailed briefings, workshops, and feedback sessions were conducted with World Bowls, World Bowls’ Member Nation representatives, Event organisers and players.

How will the WBS rankings be governed?
A WBS Rankings Ratification Committee has been established to develop, review and maintain the specific formulas for each of the above factors. The Control Group will continue to engage with the Bowls’ Industry on the rankings as the WBS calendar grows over the coming years.

What events are the inaugural rankings based on?
The inaugural rankings are based on the sanctioned events for the 2024 WBS calendar, and the past results from each of these events over the past two years. The full WBS calendar is available on the WBS website.

What events will be eligible for ranking points in the future?
Event hosts from around the world can apply for their events to be sanctioned by WBS and included in the rankings. Once sanctioned, athletes will be able to earn ranking points at these events.
